A BIT ABOUT MICHAEL MORPURGO
Michael Morpurgo is an English author of children's books, poetry, plays, and librettos:
Known for
His work is known for its magical storytelling, vivid settings, and themes of survival and the triumph of the outsider. Some of his best-known books include War Horse (1982) and Kensuke's Kingdom.
Awards
He has won many awards, including the Smarties Prize, the Writers Guild Award, the Whitbread Award, the Blue Peter Book Award, and the Eleanor Farjeon Lifetime Achievement Award.
Children's Laureate
He served as the third Children's Laureate from 2003 to 2005. He and Ted Hughes, a popular English poet, helped establish the role to highlight the importance of children's literature.
Farms for City Children
He co-founded this charity with his wife, Clare, in 1976. The charity gives children from inner cities and urban areas a week on a farm.
Knighted
He was knighted in 2018 for his services to literature and charity.
Other work
He has also written his own screenplays and librettos for opera. Five of his books have been made into films.
